Texting while driving...are you serious????

Texting while driving self explanatory…Right? Texas just passed a new law that bans the use of cell phones in schools zones. No talking or texting allowed unless hands free. Well obviously you can not use hands free to text unless you have a voice responsive device. It is a step in the right direction.
I have seen many near car accidents due to cell phone use. Texting while driving is just plain irresponsible. I find it impossible to read a text while I am driving. Typing a text while driving is possible but it seriously impairs a person’s ability to drive. I am thankful that our government has finally stepped in when it comes to this. A few years ago I was dropping off my son at school and I turned my head for a second to say something to my son as he was getting out of the car. When he closed the door I started to roll forward. Little did I know that one of his teachers was attempting to cross the street. Imagine if we all were texting and talking anytime we wanted. I completely agree with the new ban in school zones. There are too many young lives at stake to continue on the destructive path with the many electronic devices we now have in our vehicles.
I agree with the governments cell phone ban in school zones because it is putting innocent lives in danger. I do not agree with the government telling me what to do with my own life. I am referring to the seat belt laws. It is my life so therefore it is my right to choose to wear a seat belt. I would never impose my personal decision on the safety of my children. My children are always buckled in. I will abide by the laws in which my state has mandated but I am not happy about it.
All drivers should watch the public service announcement texting while driving video released in England. When I saw that baby in the car seat I about lost it. I have saved the site on my computer so I can show it to my teenager when we start the parent taught driver education course. Texting while driving is a bad idea no matter where you are driving. www.autoblog.com/2009/08/26/video-uk-texting-while-driving-psa-is-a-return-to-blood-on-the

RS Most of these mandates start in school zones because they love to say "its for the children." I don't like Government dictating what I do or don't do but its gonna happen. This law is pretty much a common sense thing, now if we can get people to quit reading the newspaper while driving!
Common sense, what is that in this day & age. People just do not use common sense anymore. I guess that is why our government feels the need to get involved in ALL aspects of our lives.
Joy - I used to text and drive until my son got upset when I nearly hit a mailbox. He then yelled at me "MOM! No more texting and driving". He was right of course. It isn't necessary. I can respond to the individual when I arrive at my destination and thanks to my 10 year old, now I will.
It is a common sense issue. Texting and driving just DO NOT MIX.
I just got an iPhone, and I'm avoiding the temptation to do anything with it while driving, or even stopped. The risks are too high.
that is not coooooooool

Joy- I agree with you about seat belts and texting while driving. I am just wondering why they made it illegal only in school zones...aren't other drivers and pedestrians lives just as important as school children? That part I do not get. I wear a seat belt too, but I don't like it either. Thanks.
